Losing weight makes it easier to cope with asthma

Immunology and Allergy Diseases Specialist Assoc. Dr. Zeynep Çelebi Sözener said, “Dietary intervention provides asthma control and improves quality of life in obese patients.”

Did you know that the increased fat tissue in our body increases the severity of asthma and disrupts asthma control? Asthma, a chronic (chronic) lung disease that causes narrowing of the intrapulmonary airways and progresses with exacerbations (attacks), can be controlled by patients with obesity losing weight under the supervision of a physician and dietitian.

It is claimed that the disease, which manifests itself with symptoms such as recurrent shortness of breath, wheezing / wheezing / whistling sound that occurs when breathing, a feeling of pressure in the chest and coughing, is found in approximately 300 million individuals in the world. In our country, approximately one in every 12-13 adults and one out of 7-8 children suffer from asthma. The incidence of asthma has been increasing over the years.

Diet improves the quality of life of obese asthma patients!

A healthy diet during the treatment of asthma positively affects the course of the disease. According to the research of Ankara University evaluating the effects of diet-induced weight loss on asthma, cough and shortness of breath complaints are reduced in patients with dieting asthma. Providing information about the results of the research, Turkish National Allergy and Clinical Immunology Association Member (AID) Assoc. Dr. Zeynep Celebi Sözener said:

“We evaluated a total of 55 obese patients with asthma in our study. While we applied a weight loss diet to one cluster, we applied normal nutrition to another cluster. We gave the diet cluster a 10-week diet program consisting of 3 main meals and 3 middle meals and measured the respiratory functions of the participants. Following this energy-limiting diet, findings such as total body load, total body fat, and waist circumference were significantly reduced in the participants compared to the other cluster. In touch with the recorded decline, we saw significant improvements in asthmatic patients.”

Assoc. Dr. Zeynep Çelebi Sözener said, “We found that patients’ night wakings decreased compared to the past, their breathing capacity increased, and their quality of life improved. “Dietary intervention improved asthma control and quality of life in obese patients.”
